For assignment three, I decided to take the hard route and create a new video using the skills I have learned in this class. Inspired by the Ted Ed videos I watch, I had hoped to emulate their editing and delivery, as I think that they do the ‘educating through video’ thing really well.
First I began with a storyboard…

By mapping out my script to my frames, I was able to more accurately capture the ways in which I wanted to highlight my material. Since I was trying to teach one simple topic, this was relatively easy as long as I made sure to have the images enhance what I was saying. During the drawing process, I also made sure to keep the amount of information on the screen to a quantity of less than six, and not to be repetitive, avoiding too much overlap between the voice-over and the video. I wanted to make sure I included something that the audience would take away and remember my video by, hence why I ended the video with an anecdote about ‘bad weeks’ and ‘waiting till Friday’. I also kept my colours to a minimum when I only needed them to highlight important information but used a full-coloured scene during the middle to avoid losing my audience’s attention halfway through. As well, following Mayer’s segmenting principle, I kept my video short. Ted Ed videos are usually around five minutes but they usually have enough information to fill that time effectively. Since I didn’t need the full five minutes to effectively convey my idea, I cut the time in half to keep my learners, well, actively learning. I employed various of Mayer’s other principles (i.e. coherence, personalization, signaling, etc.), providing only necessary information, using a conversational tone, and drawing attention to the most important information, as well as paying attention to the UDL guidelines by adding subtitles to my video.
Although using Canva or some other online video editor would have saved me time, I enjoy creating my own art and like having complete control over the design process. I felt that having something that was hand-drawn/animated gives a more personalized feel to the video, or at least that is how I feel while watching a Ted Ed video, and I wanted my audience to connect with this topic as much as I did. Having said that, I hope you enjoy my video as much as I enjoyed creating it! I am glad that I have had the chance to challenge myself and experiment with these techniques, I will definitely use them moving forward.
