As someone who enjoys learning in her spare time, my main teacher has slowly evolved from books to the internet, specifically YouTube. As of late, my favourite way to add to my steadily growing collection of ‘fun facts’ is by watching TedEd videos, which fall under the category of multimedia. Each video dialogue is accompanied by not only text but animation as well, creating an engaging and creative space for their viewers. The videos themselves are consistently on the shorter side, usually keeping to a run time of 4-8 minutes, allowing enough time to thoroughly explain the topic and satisfy curiosity while avoiding any possible cognitive overload.
A good example of this would be their video The Infinite Hotel Paradox in which the concept of infinity (a notoriously difficult concept to wrap one’s head around) is explained using both an entertaining and surprisingly accessible metaphor:
Continuing in the realm of learning through video, ‘streams’, or live streams, on YouTube or other platforms such as Twitch might be considered a grey area between multimedia and interactive media. While a stream might be categorized as interactive multimedia while a person is watching a professional teaching their audience in real-time, answering the questions posted in the chat, a recording of that live stream might also then be uploaded as a ‘VOD’, or Video On Demand, onto YouTube so that the stream is able to be rewatched or to make it accessible to people who might not have been able to view the stream when it was live thus converting it to multimedia. An example of this from my own experience might come from the YouTube channel Drawfee; a group of professional artists that occasionally do art classes digitally on Twitch and then upload them onto their original YouTube channel.
This video is from April 2021, in which one of the members of the group teaches artistic techniques for perspective by interacting with the chat:
